UNIX application migration comes to the mind of many CIO’s who are struggling with what seems like too many band-aided, patched up and upgraded applications running on 20 or 25 year old UNIX systems. Many of these are mission critical applications that banks or retailers or insurance companies and manufacturers use for their daily customer and business transactions. This means these applications can’t be allowed to fail or stop without untoward consequences, and unfortunately they’ve been running for many years like that, with very little ‘time off’. So long in fact that times have literally changed. 21st century digital demands have become massive and many older apps are unable to keep up with the ever-increasing modern demands, especially when fast responses are needed to large numbers of transactions or lots of data. Cost is another issue; support costs as well as the poor ROI and TCO numbers for old infrastructures that just can’t deliver the performance that’s needed today.
IT architects and application Migrating from UNIX to other platforms whether it be on-premise or cloud, is a complex task that needs to be well thought out and executed. UNIX application migration can be a re-platforming, where the underlying platform is upgraded which is more common for packaged applications. It can also be a re-engineering project where custom coded packaged or in-house apps must be modified to ensure they run smoothly on a new platform.
Existing UNIX applications that are custom coded are the most difficult to move across and in some cases clients prefer to do what is known as a greenfield migration> Here, the data is retained and a new application (on-premise or cloud) is set up to use the same data.
These are not as common as on-premise options such as:
- Rapid Migration – We help you create a system copy of the existing environment, upgrade it and run the new system as a sidecar so that you can see exactly how it is running and performing.
- Static Migration – The existing workload and its hardware is kept exactly as is and only the database hardware is modernized.
